LA and its baseball…

One could write a book about the good and bad things surrounding the city of Los Angeles; it’s where dreams are made, but also where they can crash and burn in a pretty horrific way. Nonetheless, L.A is the focal point for all things to do with California – money, culture, commercialism and of course sports. It plays home to several professional sporting organisations which include the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), LA Lakers and Clippers,(NBA) and then College powerhouses like the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans.

A real focal point of LA sport is the Los Angeles Angels in the MLB. Although their 2016 season had its high points, the majority saw them struggle with weak showings on offense and defense throughout the year. With a superstar like Mike Trout on their team (his accolades speak for themselves) they are in desperate rebuild mode and have been looking to acquire players through free agency and trades. One area that is in desperate need of a review is their pitching situation; a plethora of injuries and players retiring due to old age and lack of form have really hurt the Angels but Garrett Richards returns for the 2017 season which could be a monumental inclusion. However, the players backing him up have not made much of an impact with some of them having a 4ERA – in other words, not great.

On the other side, their defense was improved over the off-season with Cameron Maybin and Ben Revere being added to the side as left fielders and have proved their worth for previous teams throughout their career. Considering the Angels didn’t have a designated left fielder, it’s a massive hole being filled and should add some much needed depth to their line-up. To cap off their off-season endeavours, they also picked up Danny Espinosa from Washington who has shown his capability with the bat and his worth as a second baseman. Overall, it might be another rough year for the Angels in their bid to keep Mike Trout around, but the beauty with sport is that you never know what will happen!

The MLB season kicks off April 2nd and you can keep up to date with all the news and scores on their website or if you feel like adding your own sporting experiences to our Los Angeles page, you can do it here!
