Sydney and Allianz Stadium is hosting the next World Cup qualifier between the Socceroos and the UAE. The UAE are coming off a great win against Iraq (2-0) and boast the AFC Footballer of the Year for 2016 in Omar Abdulrahman whilst the Socceroos have drawn their last three. This game is a must-win for both teams as they try and regain a spot in the top two in their group.

There have been a couple of talking points as the contest draws closer and none more so than the unusual selections Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou made leading up to the match. Players like Trent Sainsbury and Brad Smith were named in the squad, despite having minimal minutes under their belt leading up. Ange did admit to the media that they were taking a “punt” on Sainsbury but also mentioned that he was a big part of what they were working towards as a team.

The talking point for the UAE – and could well and truly be the match winner – is Omar Adbulrahman. He was most notably renowned for his exceptional passing and dribbling during the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia and turned into a cult figure with fans due to his impressive “Sideshow Bob” hairstyle. Abdulrahman was also a significant factor for Al Ain as they reached the final of the AFC Champions League but also steering his country into the last round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

There will be continuing talking points on both sides of the teams leading up to the match and will no doubt be an interesting encounter. You’d expect the Socceroos to win this one at home but that’s the beauty of the world game; its unpredictability.
